Tyson Foods names Jeff Schomburger CEO

Jeff Schomburger, former global sales officer for Proctor & Gamble, is ending his six-year retirement to become CEO and president of Tyson Foods, effective Oct. 4.

He will assume the posts from Donnie King, a 43-year veteran of Tyson. King will remain in his current position, helping Schomburger transition into the top roles, until the October transition.

King will also remain on Tyson’s board.

Schomburger has been a director of Tyson since 2016 and has served as lead independent director since last year.

He retired from P&G in 2016 after a 35-year career with the consumer goods giant. “His experience will help us accelerate our strategic priorities and unlock new ways to win with customers and consumers—a key focus of our growth strategy,” Tyson Chairman John H. Tyson said in a statement.

NYC to upend supply-chain schedules during World Cup games

Distributors will be banned from making normal deliveries to restaurants and other food-away-from-home businesses in midtown Manhattan during most of the eight days World Cup soccer games will be played in the New York area.

The ban will be in effect from six hours before the scheduled start of the games to three hours after the matches conclude. The restriction could run from as early as 8 a.m. to as late as 11 p.m.

The limits will be in effect only in midtown, specifically from 30th Street north to 60th and from the East River to the Hudson River. However, the measure technically bans trucks from cutting through that area as well, meaning distributors will have to change their routes for serving food-away-from-home businesses north and south of the targeted area.

City officials noted that similar restrictions have been adopted by many of the cities that will play host to World Cup fans this summer.

The New York-area World Cup games are scheduled for June 13 through June 19. Local businesses are advised to reschedule deliveries or find alternative means of staying supplied.

Rhode Island extends bar hours for the Cup

Bars and other alcohol-serving establishments in Rhode Island will also face a change in operations while the soccer tournament is underway.

Lawmakers there have granted establishments selling beer, wine or spirits a multi-hour extension of their nighttime hours. Instead of shutting by 2 a.m., the bars and restaurants can remain open until 4, with the sales of alcohol permitted until 3 a.m.

Ohio eyes requirement to combat drink doctoring

A bill under consideration in the Ohio Senate would require bars and restaurants in the state to stock test strips for determining if a drink has been spiked with a drug.

When dipped into an alcoholic beverage, the strips indicate if the drink has been doctored with a “roofie,” a drug that weakens the drinker’s consciousness and their defenses against sexual attack.

A law similar to the one under consideration in Ohio has already been enacted in California, but that measure allows a liquor-serving establishment to sell the test strips as an alternative to providing them for free.
